Anti-Aging Secrets – the Power of Digestion

Are there any real secrets to a healthy life filled with youthful verve?  Usually those “secrets” are right in front of us, waiting for us to believe in them and to pay attention when life presents us with the gift of information. For those of you who remember the vigor of your high school / college years, or the clothes and activities you expressed when you were young, then you very well might have the motivation to regain some of that lost vitality. The motivation to be strong and well reminds us all of how very wonderful, vital, and essential maintaining and enhancing our lives can be. Our health can be considered to be our most valuable gift, a gift which continues giving to us personally on a daily basis, and which provides us with the vehicle to fulfill our personal mission in life.  At least that has been my experience, and the one I share with all of you reading this site.  The next question I ask is how is our food converted to the nutrients necessary to do any good for your body?  And how do these nutrients keep us vital, youthful, and full of the vitality? What we will shortly find is that you are only as young as your digestion.

From the logical point of view we know that our bodies manufacture all the ingredients of health from the raw material that we eat, drink, and breathe. Hence it is only rational to insist on the best food that we can acquire, and eat only this “the good stuff” whenever possible and practical. Now if we don’t digest (or can’t digest) what we know is good for us, then our body won’t be able to utilize and process these nutrients to manufacture our good health. Without good digestion it doesn’t really make all that much difference if we purchase the best food and supplements, when the body is struggling to make use of the gold in your intake.

How do we know that there are lots of people out there with digestive issues? One need only look at the drug stores to see the huge line of antacids which are the hallmark of a $24 Billion dollar industry. So you may be thinking what does that have to do with aging? It turns out that the body progressively loses its ability to digress as a function of age (e.g. see http://optimumhealthreport.com/antacid-industry-and-the-misery-of-menopause/).

The results of this decreased digestive function can manifest in our life as indigestion, lack of energy, inability to assimilate protein, skin problems, hair-loss, allergies, and a general inability to heal and repair. Hence there is the possibility that we are aging faster than necessary – and the corollary is that it’s possible to improve our digestion using supplements. Unfortunately it can be difficult to sort fact from fiction and understand the basic truths about our own body. In the next paragraphs we do a little self-education and will outline the fundamentals of digestion and digestive supplementation.

Only the most basic functions of the digestive system will be mentioned in this article, however much is known about animal/human digestive function (e.g. see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digestion_system ). Of primary concern here are the facts surrounding the processes associated with the stomach, pancreas, spleen, liver, and gallbladder. In particular we know that the primary objective of the body is to access the vitamins, minerals, proteins, required fatty acids, sugars, and the prototype hormonal structures within the food that we eat. The digestive process starts with chewing, and there are lots of articles on this subject that advise us to take our time and chew thoroughly to let the saliva’s initial enzymes work in conjunction with the process of breaking the bulk material into smaller pieces, but it is not the primary focus here (e.g. see http://articles.mercola.com/chewing-foods.aspx ).

The stomach is one the first places to look when wishing to augment our digestion and when attempting to prevent premature aging, and often to help the body regain health when everything else has failed. The most controversial fact to consider is that heart burn is now shown by many studies to be caused by low stomach acid, however the $24 Billion dollar ant-acid industry does not want that fact to come out. The stomach secrets two primary secretions, which include hydrochloric acid (HCL) and pepsin. These two substances are required for the proper assimilation of food, and for the activation of enzymes. This topic is very thoroughly covered by Dr Wright and is must reading/viewing for, and by everyone (e.g. see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2cZ-MSvl0o , http://www.amazon.com/Why-Stomach-Acid-Good-You/dp/0871319314 ). Therefore the first clue in our quest for anti-aging is to be sure your stomach acid is adequate and to supplement your body with stomach acid and pepsin as required. Remember not everyone is going to need stomach acid, especially if you are below the age of 30. In addition before you blame the HCL make sure you only take the supplement with food.

For me personally, the stomach acid/pepsin supplement was extremely helpful, but not the whole answer – I needed something more. That something extra was a full spectrum enzyme supplement. Interestingly enough, I visited my brother a few months earlier and looked down at his hand to see that his finger nails were in terrible shaped, that is they were distorted, discolored, and irregular. I asked him what was going on and he told me that his heart burn was so bad he could not sleep, or had to sleep in a half sitting position; hence he went to his doctor and was put on a drug that suppressed stomach acid. Now in his case I was a vehicle to help him understand that the finger nail symptom was not to be disregarded, and was in fact a symptom of his protein digestion and in particular represented his body’s ability to regenerate cologne. Hair, nail, and skin are outward manifestations of what our bodies are doing on the inside too. After talking to him he started using the Betaine hydrochloric/Pepsin (e.g. google Country life Betaine hydrochloride) but he told me that he needed far less of that supplement if he added a full spectrum enzyme. He has as of this date taken himself off of the stomach acid depressing drug, and is able to sleep at night with the use of the natural supplements just described.

The body manufactures an array of enzymes that are required to break down food into small enough particles that they can pass into the bloodstream by way of the intestines. Enzymes are biological catalysts that facilitate the breaking of organic chemical bonds. Hence they decompose the food particles at a molecular level. The basic enzymes created by the body include the following:

This enzyme is a homodimeric glycoprotein that hydrolyses the terminal alpha-galactosyl moieties from glycolipids and glycoproteins. It predominantly hydrolyzes ceramide trihexoside, and it can catalyze the hydrolysis of melibiose into galactose and glucose.

lactase

Lactase is an enzyme produced in the digestive system of infants and some, mostly European, adult humans. Lactase is essential to the complete digestion of whole milk. Lactase breaks down lactose, a simple sugar which gives milk its sweetness. Lacking lactase, a person consuming dairy products may experience the symptoms of lactose intolerance.[1] Lactase can be purchased as a food supplement, and is added to milk to produce “lactose-free” milk products.

Invertase

Invertase is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis (breakdown) of sucrose (table sugar).

Trypsin

Trypsin is a serine protease from the PA clan superfamily, found in the digestive system of many vertebrates, where it hydrolyses proteins.

 

The bottom line is that as you age, or when ill/fatigued the body has a more difficult time generating internal secretions such as stomach acid and the huge array of enzymes. Through the use of enzymes the body can recover its strength by not having to generate the enzymes internally, thereby saving the energy, and two by providing nutrients to the body that have been unavailable for the repair progress. . What does Loven Your Health really mean or bring to mind?  It means to love and respect your health, after all you only have one body. It also means respecting all the monies you earn to create this wonderful life you live. I think a certain intelligence, learning is essential to assist you in making the best choices possible for all of our consuming needs has become quite a sophisticated and full-time job. I’ll say that being able to be aware of what goes into your mouth and where it comes from is a great start to a healthier new future.  It can also be quite daunting.

For one thing there is enormous deception in our food industry as well as conditioned propaganda which keeps us thinking a certain way.  If you just reflect upon your own daily food choices or restaurant, fast food choices  you may find yourself in a rut.  Looking at food choices from a time savings, “I’m always in a rush” or convenience to the quality of foods and ingredients has become a major decision.

You might be thinking why do I need to know where my food comes from?  In short there are a lot of the people making indecent amounts of money on you and not really caring about you or your health.  Do you know how many plastics; petroleum products derivatives you are eating in your foods Chemicals for one thing fill our agriculture and farming communities. For example follow some of the Agriculture bills for the year 2013 fiscal year. There are riders which give Monsanto terrifying advantages which allow genetically engineered crops into the food supply without any review for health or safety.  They create deadlines for the USDA that makes it difficult for them to meet these deadlines. So who’s really caring about YOU or ME for that matter?

It’s your business to know! It is your passage to greater health. So, where and how foods are grown must be important. Even if you eat organic and the organic comes from Mexico or New Zeeland it’s got to be harvested green so that it can travel miles to your table.  Buying from local farmers and getting to know your farmer is also important.  Your banker is important so why not your realtor, butcher, baker and such?

The other important aspect is how a farmer does farming. How are their animals cared for and what kind of feed they get.  Are the cows fed bovine hormones, and antibiotics to make more milk so more money can be made?  Do you know what bovine hormones do?  Remember your kids and you are drinking the milk.  Of course, if cows are fed bovine hormones they need antibiotics for the puss that’s formed from the inflammation. Bovine, puss and antibiotics are not substances any of us want in our foods as there are adverse effects to our bodies.

Another part of this disintegration around fast foods is the family and eating together.  After all fast food only requires eating with your hands doesn’t it?  So fast food is fast but what else is compromised?  Eating together as a family provides an opportunity to enjoy community with one another.  So not only have we compromised the quality of our foods but the chance for our families to enjoy one another’s company.  As you can see this is a rather big topic.

There may be some other points that evolve from better eating habits.  Your family might actually have more fun around preparing foods.  You might get healthier, your kids might not have so many infections, or colds, your clothes might fit better, you might have more energy.

Conscious living and eating provides real gratitude for the efforts you put into your home, family, meals and life.  Staying away from chemicals in your foods, cleaning, cosmetics will change your life.  Remember the markets are filled with items shelves which contain chemicals and plastics and questionable compounds no longer innocent to ingest.  They are there to make indecent amounts of monies for big conglomerates food companies. Who is protecting you or your family if not YOU.  Think about it!

A Simple Pineapple – MUST Read

Let’s look at how pineapple affects other conditions.

Pineapple is high in manganese, a mineral that is critical to development of strong bones and connective tissue. A cup of fresh pineapple will give you nearly 75% of the recommended daily amount.

It is particularly helpful to older adults, whose bones tend to become brittle with age.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme, is the key to pineapple’s value.
Proteolytic means “breaks down protein”, which is why pineapple is known to be a digestive aid. It helps the body digest proteins more efficiently.
Bromelain is also considered an effective anti-inflammatory.

Regular ingestion of at least one half cup of fresh pineapple daily is purported to relieve painful joints common to osteoarthritis.It also produces mild pain relief.

Natural health versus the Disease Perspective

I thought I would pass on a table given to me by email that shows the difference in perspective between the natural health movement and the medical system as we know it today. It’s a sad state of affairs when the healing arts lead to the recommendation of multiple addictive drugs that may have compounded significant side effects, or to a recommendation to remove an organ because it is almost dead, but not quit. Where is the law to first do no harm rule? At what point do you give up on Gods ability to heal the body with natural products and adopt a philosophy that allows doctors to play god by calculating your odds of survival against the know side effects of a proscribed poisonous drug?

It seems completely unscientific to me to cut out parts of the body that were once working and throw them out instead of focusing on ways to improve their function (e.g. tonsils / adenoids). I’m concerned about the medical schools, drug makers, and doctors who choose to focus on the profit associated with drugs instead of working with nature remedies that are statically as effective, but which cannot be patented and profited from their use. If money more important to life, and is that a crime against society? Is it just me that finds the current medical system sicker than its patients? Do you have an opinion you can share?

There are many aspects to health

There are many aspects to health.  One of the reasons I titled this web site Lovenyourhealth is that in order to be healthy you need to learn to love your health.  So if you’ve been on the run eating fast foods, and have experienced digestive, issues, energy issues, and many others you get to become your own detective.

You might ask yourself what it means to LOVE your health.  I think the question begs to consider appreciation of :

1. Your body,

2, your mind

3. Whatever conditions you have created in your life to bring you to this point.

Now you are ready to make shifts in your diet to enhance the best possible food choices.  For one buying organic and NON GMO is one of the essential choices.  There are lots of recipes that you can make and bake with these choices.  There are also a fair amount of good restaurants for you to choose great foods.

Become acquainted with your area of the country and the food stores around you.  I would also suggest you become familiar your local farmers.  Clean out your shelves and refrigerator.  Make sure you include Teflon pots.  Anything with a coating is not good to cook with.

Water is another item.  Check out your water quality.  I recently moved into an apartment and have had to replace a filtration system 3 times due to the amount of sediment.  Clean water is essential.  Due to the pour food and water quality in this country we all need to become vigilant about everything that we put into our mouths and the mouths of our children.

The way we cook is another point.  If you have a microwave you will need to look at the aspects of cooking with microwaves they change the true flavor of foods.  I have never used a microwave. Not alone is the food taste changed but the quality of nutrition is changed.

Learning to use your kitchen in the best way possible means that you will need to learn to Love Your Health.  Have at least 3 vegetables at each meal.  I always have a boiling pot of salted water cooking.  I can put anything in there at a moment’s notice.   I cook more than enough vegetable at a time as I can always reheat or use left overs in other dishes or even as a vegetable pate on sprouted breads.

Sprouted bread metabolize as vegetables.  Check the foods and tastes that are important to your satisfaction.  This is a great time of year for fresh vegetables and salads.  Try some fermented vegetables as they enhance digestion.   Vegetable purees from already cooked vegetables can be a tasty alternative to your diet. Cooking small amounts of lentils, quinoa another grain with purees makes more than enough for lunch.  I would say a tablespoon of each satisfies tastes and colors.  If your appetites are greater use some ferment sprouted breads or flat breads.

Alternate between the highest quality chicken, turkeys, fish, beef, will give you a great start for a wonderful meal at least once per week.  Miso soup is another staple I use daily.  I like the lighter one.  I usually have Miso at lunch. I have given you FOOD for thought.  What foods choices will you are making to support your health?  Whether you cut down on sugar and foods which contain sugars or go cold-turkey any step you take will improve your health.

It’s important to look at weight, health and vitality and any health compromises you have already incurred.  Habits which are addictive would be abusive to your body.  Addictive habits would not be a way to support loving your body.   Honesty, care, commitment and patience are really what have required of all of us to achieve health and wellness.

There are many things about food which are essential to learn relative to the quality of food you are buying.  How would you rate yourself in the meal preparation category?  Acquaint yourself with the facts about what is happening to our foods and water, our agriculture and air.  Educating yourself about foods and the choices restaurants make to support NON-GMO, buy from local farmers to prepare their menus are the same choices you need to make to protect your health and the health of those you love.

It seemed overwhelming to me at first many years ago when I first realized that what I put into my body essentially created how energetic I felt.  Sometimes it takes several days to feel the effect of a meal you ate.  Becoming a skilled detective for your health will open many doors for your relaxation and vitality.

Not only did I study foods and food combing but how supplements were made and marketed.  What’s in everything and how is everything you eat and take absorbed, metabolized and distributed by your body.  So everything, no matter what needs to be absorbed by your body to be effective and efficient to your body mind and wallet.

I will go into all these areas over time.  I hope that you will begin to view yourself and your foods differently and that you will learn to love yourself and love your efforts and love your health.  You will be the benefactor of the greatest return for your efforts.

What my reason for writing this is to create a Health and Wellness Bazar filled with luscious choices for all sorts of health issues.  The Bazar is a forum for health, strength, structural appearance, physical movement, beauty, anti-aging. Iceberg Effect

What this picture shows is the continuing compromises which occur in our bodies over time. What we notice as a disease is only the TIP of the iceberg on the very top of issues that develop deep within our bodies. Hence, a health imbalance or (disease name of some kind) develops inside of us and is often hidden and unknown. It takes time to develop  the complete list of problems. One day you go to the doctor or have what appear to be sudden symptoms that relates to some kind of disease name according to your doctor. The disease name fits into a certain category along with everyone else with the same disease name and then you are prescribed certain drugs to take. The drugs do not make health, they relieve a symptom. A Drug always has a side effect. What this picture relates is that there are always steps to take to gain more improved health and wellness. GMO Foods: Reasons to care to about what you eat

There are many reasons that being aware of the quality of food you eat and the effects that food could have on your body.

#1. The food you eat is part of your body’s biochemistry.  That means your body is affected by what you eat.  If your energy is low, or gets low at certain times, or you’re hungry most of the time, just feel bad, or have headaches, have sugar cravings, any of these functional aspects of your body you could benefit from better choices in your nutrition.

#2 Many chemicals are in prepared foods, dyes, colorings, and GM ingredients and foods both in Restaurants and on grocery shelves.

#3. The quality of farming and quality of soil affects the foods grown in that soil.

These are only a few aspects to consider when purchasing your family’s foods. On this web site I am planning to write about your body’s chemistry and the effects of problem foods on your body.

Food choices are not innocent any more. It seems everywhere I turn around I see clues to the contamination of our food and water. So if you want to be in the driver seat about your choices your job has just gotten more complicated.

WHAT’S HAPPENING politically?  Right now genetically engineered sweet corn from Monsanto is headed for Walmart store shelves, the first GMO product to travel from farms directly to consumer plates. Should that be a concern to you? Let me fill you in some more.

Congress buckled to corporate lobbyists and removed the provision from the Farm Bill. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved the corn at the end of 2011.  It is designed to be resistant to Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide and to produce a Bt toxin that kills insects that try to feed on the plants.  That might sound great since who wants to share our gardens with insects. One fact here seems innocent enough but looking further we realize if we eat these foods these chemicals are going into our cells.  The next question damage do these chemicals do to our bodies?

There are many stores who will not sell genetically engineered foods. Trader Joe’s Whole Foods, General Mills are stores that have stood up for us as consumers. It’s clear for me to spend my money at stores and restaurants which care about my health and wellbeing. Monsanto says their corn is safer and less toxic (key ingredient in it is Agent Orange). Scientists have cast doubt go to reports beyond pesticides.

GE crops also present cross-pollination risks for organic farms, the subject of an ongoing dispute over patents between Monsanto and local farmers.  More than 300,000 people including farmers, seed growers and agricultural organizations participated in the suit against Monsanto.  A federal judge dismissed the case in, but the organics community has appealed ( check out FEDERAL GMO Labeling Measure Thwarted: Federal_GMO_Thwarted ).

Many feel GMO labeling should be required in the US. The signatures collected in the USA last year to establish the labeling of GMO foods amounted to over 1 million people.  The effort was ignored by the FDA.

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) remains committed to getting the labeling of GMO foods passed this November in California.

If you want to know what you can do about this call your senator or congress representatives and commit to getting the labeling bill passed.

Almost 50 countries already require GMO labeling. Contact the Food and Drug Administration to express your support for labeling.

Chemicals. There is also a link between herbicide use and birth defects and cancer. In short much evidence shows a need concern and proceed be leery of  using GMO’s.

Monsanto has driven dozens of farmers into bankruptcy and many organic and non-GMO farmers are now afraid to plant seeds. Every year Monsanto investigates more than 500 farmers with “seed police.” Farmers believe they have the right to farm the way they choose and not to be forced into farming Monsanto’s chemicals.
