Are there any real secrets to a healthy life filled with youthful verve? Usually those “secrets” are right in front of us, waiting for us to believe in them and to pay attention when life presents us with the gift of information. For those of you who remember the vigor of your high school / college years, or the clothes and activities you expressed when you were young, then you very well might have the motivation to regain some of that lost vitality. The motivation to be strong and well reminds us all of how very wonderful, vital, and essential maintaining and enhancing our lives can be. Our health can be considered to be our most valuable gift, a gift which continues giving to us personally on a daily basis, and which provides us with the vehicle to fulfill our personal mission in life. At least that has been my experience, and the one I share with all of you reading this site. The next question I ask is how is our food converted to the nutrients necessary to do any good for your body? And how do these nutrients keep us vital, youthful, and full of the vitality? What we will shortly find is that you are only as young as your digestion.
From the logical point of view we know that our bodies manufacture all the ingredients of health from the raw material that we eat, drink, and breathe. Hence it is only rational to insist on the best food that we can acquire, and eat only this “the good stuff” whenever possible and practical. Now if we don’t digest (or can’t digest) what we know is good for us, then our body won’t be able to utilize and process these nutrients to manufacture our good health. Without good digestion it doesn’t really make all that much difference if we purchase the best food and supplements, when the body is struggling to make use of the gold in your intake.
How do we know that there are lots of people out there with digestive issues? One need only look at the drug stores to see the huge line of antacids which are the hallmark of a $24 Billion dollar industry. So you may be thinking what does that have to do with aging? It turns out that the body progressively loses its ability to digress as a function of age (e.g. see http://optimumhealthreport.com/antacid-industry-and-the-misery-of-menopause/).
The results of this decreased digestive function can manifest in our life as indigestion, lack of energy, inability to assimilate protein, skin problems, hair-loss, allergies, and a general inability to heal and repair. Hence there is the possibility that we are aging faster than necessary – and the corollary is that it’s possible to improve our digestion using supplements. Unfortunately it can be difficult to sort fact from fiction and understand the basic truths about our own body. In the next paragraphs we do a little self-education and will outline the fundamentals of digestion and digestive supplementation.
Only the most basic functions of the digestive system will be mentioned in this article, however much is known about animal/human digestive function (e.g. see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digestion_system ). Of primary concern here are the facts surrounding the processes associated with the stomach, pancreas, spleen, liver, and gallbladder. In particular we know that the primary objective of the body is to access the vitamins, minerals, proteins, required fatty acids, sugars, and the prototype hormonal structures within the food that we eat. The digestive process starts with chewing, and there are lots of articles on this subject that advise us to take our time and chew thoroughly to let the saliva’s initial enzymes work in conjunction with the process of breaking the bulk material into smaller pieces, but it is not the primary focus here (e.g. see http://articles.mercola.com/chewing-foods.aspx ).
The stomach is one the first places to look when wishing to augment our digestion and when attempting to prevent premature aging, and often to help the body regain health when everything else has failed. The most controversial fact to consider is that heart burn is now shown by many studies to be caused by low stomach acid, however the $24 Billion dollar ant-acid industry does not want that fact to come out. The stomach secrets two primary secretions, which include hydrochloric acid (HCL) and pepsin. These two substances are required for the proper assimilation of food, and for the activation of enzymes. This topic is very thoroughly covered by Dr Wright and is must reading/viewing for, and by everyone (e.g. see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2cZ-MSvl0o , http://www.amazon.com/Why-Stomach-Acid-Good-You/dp/0871319314 ). Therefore the first clue in our quest for anti-aging is to be sure your stomach acid is adequate and to supplement your body with stomach acid and pepsin as required. Remember not everyone is going to need stomach acid, especially if you are below the age of 30. In addition before you blame the HCL make sure you only take the supplement with food.
For me personally, the stomach acid/pepsin supplement was extremely helpful, but not the whole answer – I needed something more. That something extra was a full spectrum enzyme supplement. Interestingly enough, I visited my brother a few months earlier and looked down at his hand to see that his finger nails were in terrible shaped, that is they were distorted, discolored, and irregular. I asked him what was going on and he told me that his heart burn was so bad he could not sleep, or had to sleep in a half sitting position; hence he went to his doctor and was put on a drug that suppressed stomach acid. Now in his case I was a vehicle to help him understand that the finger nail symptom was not to be disregarded, and was in fact a symptom of his protein digestion and in particular represented his body’s ability to regenerate cologne. Hair, nail, and skin are outward manifestations of what our bodies are doing on the inside too. After talking to him he started using the Betaine hydrochloric/Pepsin (e.g. google Country life Betaine hydrochloride) but he told me that he needed far less of that supplement if he added a full spectrum enzyme. He has as of this date taken himself off of the stomach acid depressing drug, and is able to sleep at night with the use of the natural supplements just described.
The body manufactures an array of enzymes that are required to break down food into small enough particles that they can pass into the bloodstream by way of the intestines. Enzymes are biological catalysts that facilitate the breaking of organic chemical bonds. Hence they decompose the food particles at a molecular level. The bottom line is that as you age, or when ill/fatigued the body has a more difficult time generating internal secretions such as stomach acid and the huge array of enzymes. Through the use of enzymes the body can recover its strength by not having to generate the enzymes internally, thereby saving the energy, and two by providing nutrients to the body that have been unavailable for the repair progress. . Other considerations with respect to digestion include insuring that the intestinal track has flora through the use of probiotics, and the use of vermicide (for example to de-worm).
